I almost think they are more beautiful in the winter.

Some of our favorite places to go are out of the way. Tahquamenon Falls is one of those places without doubt. Because of that, it can be difficult to find hotels near Tahquamenon Falls
Not many people know that there are two different waterfalls here at the Tahquamenon Falls. Yes, both are on the Tahquamenon River, but aside from that, they are quite different! The upper waterfall is called the "e;Root Beer Falls"e; because the water is colored brown with tannic acid. The lower falls is called "e;The Alpha Falls"e; (or sometimes "e;Number One"e;) because they were the first to be discovered in 1852. The lower falls can hold up to 20 times more water than the upper falls.
The lower Tahquamenon Falls is also over 200 feet (60 m) wide, but only about 9–12 feet (3–4 m) high, depending on the amount of water flowing over it. This makes it America's second largest vertical waterfall. During the spring runoff, the tannin-stained water plunges an estimated 53 feet (16 m) down into the basin below—over twice the height of Niagara Falls and is listed in Ripley's Believe It or Not as being the third highest commercial waterfall in the United States.
The Tahquamenon Falls, located near the Upper Peninsula town of Paradise, Michigan, is part of the Tahquamenon River. This year-round attraction draws visitors from around the world, as well as America's largest freshwater dunes and the shores of Lake Superior. The falls are split into upper and lower sections by a small island, and can be reached by boat during the winter months.
The falls are within Tahquamenon Falls State Park, between Newberry, Michigan, and Paradise, Michigan. They are a popular tourist destination in the Upper Peninsula during all seasons. Snowmobile trails lead almost to the falls, and walkways are kept clear for most of the winter.
While the name Tahquamenon is now primarily associated with the falls, it appears to have originally designated an island in Whitefish Bay: Tahquamenon Island. The first written record of the name appears as "e;Outakouaminan"e; in a 1671 French map.
